＜目次＞ここ数年でスマートフォンのカメラ性能の向上が著しい。しかも、ファーウェイを筆頭に、サムスンやシャオミ、オッポ（OPPO）などが2018年に入ってから発表した最新モデルのカメラは、デジカメではできない機能も多く搭載している。大手から新興メーカーまで、スマートフォン各社の新製品発表会で、真っ先に説明されるのはカメラ機能になっている。スマートフォンの心臓部である高速なCPUや、見栄えそのものを左右するディスプレイサイズの紹介はもはや後回しになっているのだ。それもそのはずで、多くの消費者がスマートフォンを買い替える際に関心を持っているのは搭載されるCPUの型番ではなく、いかにきれいな写真が撮れるかという点だろう。もはやスマートフォンの基本的な性能差は同じ価格帯であればほとんど変わらない。他社との差別化要素として今、カメラの競争が活発化しているのだ。では、カメラのどの性能を各社は強化しているのだろうか。それは暗いシーンでの撮影性能だ。新製品発表会では夜景や室内の集合写真などが撮影例としてよく取り上げられる。最近のスマートフォンのカメラは、明るいシーンであればどの製品でも十分きれいな写真を撮ることができる。しかし光の少ないシーンでは、低性能なカメラではノイズが乗ってしまったり、そもそも被写体がまったく見えない。高性能なカメラであれば、目で見えないものまでもくっきりと写し出してしまう。夜景の描写の美しさのアピールが、カメラ性能そのものを代表しているのだ。もちろん明るい大口径のレンズをつけた一眼レフカメラなら暗いシーンもしっかりと描写できる。しかしスマートフォンのカメラの進化は「暗いところを写せる」という、カメラの性能だけではないのだ。2018年に入ってから各社が採用しているAI識別機能は、スマートフォンだからこそ実現できる機能なのだ。AI識別機能は、食事、風景、動物といった被写体に応じて、自動的にカメラのモードを切り替えてくれる機能だ。一昔前のコンパクトデジカメやスマートフォンは、カメラの設定に多数のモードを搭載していた。どれだけ多くのモードを搭載するかがカメラ機能の目安の一つでもあったのだ。しかしAI識別機能の登場により、モード切り替えという設定項目そのものがなくなった。これからはスマートフォンを取り出してカメラのシャッターを切れば、どんなシーンでも美しい写真が撮影できるようになる。しかも犬と猫、草木と花のように、似たような被写体であっても別のものとしてしっかり認識してくれる。AI識別機能は、高性能化するスマートフォンのカメラを誰もが簡単に使えるようにするものなのである。このAI機能は高性能なCPUを搭載し、常にインターネットにつながっているスマートフォンだからこそ実現できるものである。写真撮影時のバックデータは常に収集され、最適な写真撮影情報がビックデータとして蓄積されていく。そしてそれをカメラ機能のアップデートに反映させることで、スマートフォンのカメラはどんどん賢く、そして簡単に使えるようになっていくのだ。また今や多くのスマートフォンが搭載しているボケ機能も、デジカメにはできない芸当をやってくれる。デジカメでボケ写真を撮る場合は、絞りを使い被写界深度を操作する。一方、スマートフォンはカメラを2つ搭載し、片側のカメラで遠近情報を保存する。そのため撮影したあとからボケの深度や場所を変えることができるのである。このボケ機能でデジカメがスマートフォンに追いつくためには、今のカメラとしてのデザインを放棄し、2つのレンズを登載しなくてはならないだろう。このようにスマートフォンのカメラはもはやデジカメがライバルではなく、スマートフォンならではの特性を生かした機能の強化を進めている。しかし各社が目指しているのはやみくもな高性能化・高機能化ではない。消費者がスマートフォンのカメラに求めているのは、もちろん美しく簡単に写真が撮影できることだ。しかしそれだけではなく、撮影したあとにSNSなどでシェアするまでが「写真撮影体験」なのである。【次ページ】大手が高性能スマホを投入し、それを追いかける図式は過去にTo List
