The smartphone "nova 5T" released by Huawei Japan on November 29th. Although it is in the middle range price range of 59,950 yen (tax included), it is equipped with the same SoC as the top model, equipped with a "quad camera", and has specifications that exceed the price.
One of the major features of the nova 5T is that it has a full range of camera functions, which Huawei is good at. To promote its camera function, Huawei invited photographer Yukio Uchida to hold a workshop for media professionals.
First of all, if you organize the cameras of nova 5T, there are four cameras on the back. The main is a camera equipped with an effective 48 million pixel 1/2 inch CMOS sensor. The focal length of the lens is 26mm and the F value is F1.8. The second is an ultra-wide-angle camera with an effective 16-megapixel sensor, a lens focal length of 17 mm, and an F-number of F2.2.
The third is a 2 megapixel depth of field camera. This is a camera that measures the distance to the subject and separates the subject from the background more accurately to achieve natural blur. This camera is not used for depiction. The fourth is a macro camera, which has 2 million effective pixels and an F-number of F2.4. You can shoot as close as 4 cm to the subject.
I usually use two cameras, a main camera and an ultra-wide-angle lens, but the zoom function is also practical because it has a high-pixel sensor with 48 million pixels. By default, shooting is done with 12 million pixels, and zooming up to 2x without deterioration of image quality. It also supports digital zoom up to 10x.
Although it is not a physical zoom, it is equipped with a depth-of-field camera, which enables more natural depiction when shooting with blurring such as portraits. Since you can get closer to the subject, it seems that you can use it positively in portraits. It seems that it will affect the resolution to some extent, but there may be a decision to physically mount an easy-to-use ultra-wide-angle lens and leave the telephoto to high pixels.
Mr. Uchida explained the merits of the nova 5T, in addition to the high level of a camera that can take beautiful pictures without thinking, the three-dimensional background blur in portraits, and the high depiction of handheld night view shooting with a powerful image stabilization function. I will give you strength.
Since this workshop is the time of autumn leaves, Mr. Uchida introduced three points of light (especially transmitted light), color scheme, and color temperature as a beautiful way to take pictures of autumn leaves. As "Stained glass is not beautiful when viewed from the outside, but beautiful when viewed from the inside" (Mr. Uchida), the autumn leaves look beautiful when taken as close as possible and shining light from the inside.
The color scheme is a shooting method that uses the complementary colors (*), especially when the subject is captured in the screen, the autumn leaves become more vivid. Therefore, by taking in green leaves such as evergreens and the blue sky, the autumn leaves will become more colorful.
* Complementary colors: Two colors located on opposite sides of the color wheel. For example, in the case of additive color mixing by RGB (three primary colors of light), red and cyan, yellow and blue, green and magenta, etc.
Regarding the color temperature, if it is nova 5T, adjust the white balance from "Pro mode". If you set it to "Fluorescent light" here, magenta will be emphasized and the colors of the autumn leaves will be enriched.
By using these white balance adjustments, you can set "cloudy" to enhance warm colors, or use "incandescent light bulbs" to emphasize cool colors. Mr. Uchida introduced that by using this technique for illumination photography, warm and cool expressions can be achieved.
For this workshop, we visited Hase-dera Temple in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and took pictures using a model. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy sky, but Mr. Uchida advised the participants, but rather I feel that he enjoyed shooting the most. Mr. Uchida's advice was, for example, that if you ask a model to stand at the doorway of a building and take a picture, the difference in brightness becomes large and you can get the effect of illuminating.
The price of 59,950 yen for the nova 5T may seem halfway, but the specs are comparable to the high-end model, and it is a product with excellent cost performance.
The nova 5T's SoC (processor) "Kirin 980" is also installed in the top model P30 Pro, with 8GB of memory and 128GB of storage, which is more than enough. Mr. Uchida also emphasized the point that he can shoot sharply.
Mr. Uchida says that the camera function is "sorry that there is no monochrome", but he seems to like the functions such as the aperture that controls blurring and the night view mode that allows you to shoot without blurring. I was impressed by the fact that the resolution was high and I was able to shoot as I wanted, so I enjoyed shooting with the other participants.
Due to the economic friction between the United States and China, Huawei is no longer able to use the Google Mobile Service (GMS) for installing Google services on the Android OS. However, nova 5T is equipped with GMS due to the timing of development, and you can use Google services such as Gmail and Google Maps without problems, including Android updates.
