Attraction that does not look like a conventional desktop PC.
The new iMac (2021 model) to be released on May 21. This is the first display-integrated Mac equipped with Apple's CPU "M1 chip", and this time there are 7 different colors!
I came to the Gizmodo editorial department early, so I opened it right away. What arrived this time is pink (the one in the middle in the image). No, I'm getting excited!
The back is the one with the strongest color!
When I took the pink iMac out of the box, wondering how pink it was, it wasn't pink at all!
The front jaw part (lower part of the main unit) and the base are pink, and the bezel is white. It's not as pink as I thought it would be.
On the other hand, the back is really pink! It is a dark color closer to red than pink. By the way, the Apple mark is quite large and the claim is also large. It's also light pink. There is a sense of unity.
When viewed from the front with the power turned off, the iMac looks different from previous iMacs, coupled with the white border. I wonder if pink is floating... It's not so pink on a computer.
However, the impression changes completely when you turn on the power. The wallpaper in the initial state is pink to match the main body color, so it fits nicely. In this state, I thought, "Oh, pink is good." cute. However, if the wallpaper is a different color, it will still feel strange.
Every detail is pink!
Next is the peripherals. From the left of the image, the keyboard "Magic Keyboard", the trackpad "Magic Trackpad", and the mouse "Magic Mouse" were included. All three are the same pale pink color as the main body. If there is a sense of unity so far, the iMac is already like an interior.
Apple's obsession doesn't stop there. The power cable and Lightning cable for charging are also pink! The cables are made of fabric material, the cables are easy to handle, and above all, they are cute. The Gizmodo editorial team even asked if they could sell the Lightning cable alone. It's so cute, isn't it?
It looks smaller than the 24-inch size
The new iMac that appeared this time has only one size of 24 inches. Until now, the iMac has been available in two sizes, 21.5 inches and 27 inches, so it feels like it's in the middle (by the way, the 27-inch model is sold together).
When I put it side by side with the 27-inch iMac Pro, I couldn't help but say, "Hey!" I don't think 24 inches is that small, but I feel a big difference between 27 inches and 24 inches.
I wonder if the reason why the iMac feels so small is because of the thinness of the bezel. The jaw part (the frame at the bottom of the display) doesn't change much in terms of size, but the bezel (the edge that surrounds the display) is thinner, so I think it looks even smaller. Although it is 24 inches, it can be said that there is not much pressure.
I looked at it from the side. The new iMac is thin! The thickness of the iMac is 11.5mm, and the thickness of the iMac Pro is not officially announced, but as shown in the picture. The depth of the stand is 14.7mm for iMac and 20.3cm for iMac Pro. This is actually a very significant change, and it makes it easier to place the iMac on a slightly narrower desk. This point was a big hit with iMac users in the Gizmodo editorial department.
The weight is also quite different. iMac is 4.48kg, iMac Pro is 9.7kg. When I was on the move for the shoot, I couldn't help but yell "Karu!" It's really light. You can carry it by holding it under your arm.
The new iMac is thin and light. Putting aside the need for thinness and lightness in a desktop computer, I was impressed with Apple's technological prowess in making it so slim and light. This is probably because the entire board can be made smaller by mounting the M1 chip.
The SD card slot and USB-A port are gone
The new iMac is pretty simple. A style that doesn't add anything extra. The SD card slot and USB-A terminal that existed in the old model are gone.
Oh, there's a headphone jack. If you prefer wired headphones, don't worry.
iMac is not a model that challenges the "thinness limit" like the MacBook series. So, to be honest, I think it would be better if the terminals were compatible with more types, but I wonder if this will happen if design is prioritized.
Maybe there's a new category called "portable desktop PC"?
My first impression of the colorful iMac was that it was slim, light and cute. In particular, there is a sense of unity in the coloring, so much so that I can't help but think about which color to match with the atmosphere of the room. I don't think people care much about the color of the body of a computer, but if there are 7 colors, you might get lost.
Also, this thinness and lightness will surprise you. It's so light that you can easily carry it around your home or office. Remote work allows you to move around the house while working, and notebook PCs are standard in free-address offices, but maybe iMac can be used in that way as well. I thought, "I wish this iMac had a handle."
Perhaps this iMac is a new category of "mobile desktop PC"? It is finished to the extent that it seems like that.
Should I buy one? what color should i do? I've been working mainly on laptops for more than 15 years, but just looking at them makes me think that way. This iMac was so attractive that it didn't look like a conventional desktop PC. I think some of you have already pre-ordered it, but when it arrives and you open it, I think you'll be glad you bought it.
