This is great, even though it's multi-functional and downsized.
DJI has released a new electric gimbal "DJI OM 5" for smartphones. It is a new model that is the 5th generation counting from DJI Osmo Mobile (2016). What is the most notable characteristic of this aircraft? It's pretty obvious when you look at the photo.
That's right. As you can see, DJI OM 5 has a built-in telescopic rod.

First, let's look at the standard state. It's like a standard gimbal for smartphones, where the three electric gimbals keep the balance and perfectly match the position of the smartphone horizontally. The front side has a joystick, shutter / record button, and camera switching button, and is arranged in a layout that allows smooth movement with the thumb of the hand holding DJI OM 5.
Equipped with a trigger button that can be operated with the index finger on the back, and a power/mode button and a zoom lever on the side. There is a dent on the underside of the trigger button, which is designed to hook the middle finger and is also a device to store the DJI OM 5 compactly.
Rotate the electric gimbal part to adjust the position and fold it using the hinge provided on the arm. The structure is the same as existing smartphone gimbals, but by reducing the size of the arm and grip and the position of the hinge, it can be stored in a smaller size (about 2/3 of the DJI OM4. Although it is bumpy, it is smaller than a plastic bottle). It is now possible. Then, one of the electric gimbals is hooked on the recessed part of the grip to transform it.
Thanks to this structure, you can quickly put it in a pocket with a little extra space. It doesn't get caught when you put it in and take it out. Smartphone gimbals are convenient, but for those who find it troublesome to take them out of their bags, this model will be a blessing.

Furthermore, if you pull the gimbal up, it will extend. The rod stretches like a selfie stick. Its length is 215mm.
The telescoping rod also has a hinge so you can adjust the angle.
However, there is a backside to this structure. In the normal state, the movable range is narrow, making it difficult to point downward DJI OM5.
That said, telescopic rods are extremely effective. You can shoot from a high position without using a stepladder. Low angle shooting is easy without bending over.
Even if the in-camera is not an ultra-wide-angle camera, there is also the advantage that it is easy to shoot while capturing a lot of the background. The expansion of the shooting range with the telescopic rod is certain, and it seems that the new model is amazing. However, since the movable range is narrow, there are scenes where you feel a little stressed if you use it in the same way as a conventional smartphone gimbal.
So if you have a DJI OM 4 and don't plan on taking selfies or taking high/low-angle shots much, you may not need to upgrade just yet.
But if you are a user of Osmo Mobile 3 or less, you will need to replace it.
Accessories that can magnetically mount smartphones
That's because optional parts that can be used with both DJI OM 4 and DJI OM 5 will expand the shooting range the most. .
DJI OM 4 and DJI OM 5 have magnetic mounts for the electric gimbal and smartphone clamp. You can also use DJI's magnetic ring holder that can be glued to the phone cover as a clamp.
The newly released “Fill Light Phone Clamp” (upper left) is a clamp that will definitely enhance the capabilities of the DJI OM 4 and DJI OM 5. It's bigger than the standard smartphone clamp, and it also has a switch and a USB Type-C terminal.
Actually, this is an LED light. Moreover, it emits light from the top and bottom of the smartphone, making it difficult for shadows to appear when taking selfies. You can also adjust the color and brightness of the light, which is effective when taking pictures of pets and children playing in a darkened garden. Originally, the gimbal for smartphones had higher correction power at night than the electronic image stabilization of smartphones, but the area that can be shot has further increased with the Fill Light Phone Clamp.
